Mission, vision, and the work we do
Mission
The AAHRC exists to provide community leadership, support, and direction for the development of educational and social programming addressing multicultural relations in our community. The Council seeks to continue the work of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in his tireless struggle for non-violent social change and respect for all ethnic and cultural differences.
Vision
An Athens where every neighbor — across race, faith, and generation — enjoys the dignity, opportunity, and belonging that Dr. King envisioned. A region strengthened by education, service, and civic engagement rooted in nonviolent social change.
What we do
Youth Development
Programs and mentorship that prepare Athens-area youth to lead in their schools and communities.
Scholarship Programs
General and Founder's Scholarships supporting graduating high-school seniors year after year.
Civil Rights Education
Guided civil-rights tours and study opportunities that connect our students to the movement's living history.
Community Leadership
Recognizing and cultivating leaders through the annual MLK Awards Banquet and standing committees.
Areas served
AAHRC serves Athens-Clarke County and the surrounding counties of Northeast Georgia — including Oconee, Madison, Barrow, Jackson, and Oglethorpe — with programs, scholarships, and events open to residents across the region.
